How to Get Up in the Morning...and Never Be Late Again!
Ugh, the dreaded mornings! None of us like waking up when our alarms demand us to. It can be really difficult to get up in the mornings and leave our comfy, warm embrace of our beds! So, let’s sort this problem out - join us as we find out how you can get up in the morning!
Morning Troubles
Let’s face it, ever since we were kids - we’ve always hated being told to get up and get moving straight away. That might have been your mom or dad, maybe your guardian or partner - and now it’s that pesky alarm clock!
It’s a daily struggle for some of us to get up in the morning and for the really bad mornings, it sets our day up to be a bad one! The thing is, usually trouble waking up in the morning is down to trouble sleeping in the night, and that can be down to so many reasons - most of which can be rectified.
So, let’s take a look at some of the things we can do to help us wake up!
Sorting Out That Sleep
So, we know that getting a good night’s sleep is important and it’s vital for us to get that right if we’re struggling to wake up in the mornings. So, here’s some things we can do:
Consistency Is Key
Our bodies and our minds adapt to routine with military precision. The more we do things, eventually it will become second nature, and the need for an alarm clock will soon be a thing of the past. Having said that, even with an alarm clock - having a set period of time to wake up every morning can help us over time to get up without any problems.
This all comes from the night before though. Ensure you’re setting yourself a bed time and you’re sticking to it. If you get a good night’s sleep the night before, the need to stay asleep will be shortened dramatically and you won’t feel like you’ve not slept. Interrupting the circadian rhythm with times not set for ourselves can really throw everything out of whack, so try and manage yourself to within a 15 minute window everyday (including on the weekend!)
Some people think they can reward themselves by sleeping in on the weekend but it’s not good. If you’re ready to wake up, it’s better to wake up. Your body clock will simply end up all over the place if you decide to add sleeping hours on the weekends.
Speaking of this, always ensure you’re getting out of bed when you don’t need to be there. If you continue spending so much time in bed, regardless if you’re having an early night - you’ll result in giving yourself sleeping disorders like insomnia or narcolepsy.
Ignore The Snooze Button
We’ve all done this - but the snooze button, as tempting as it is, will make it far more difficult to wake up in the mornings. Hitting the snooze button will only disrupt your sleeping cycle. Your body releases hormones during the sleeping process, so if you fall back into a deeper sleep - you’ll feel awful when you’re forced to wake up or risk being late!
Get The Light In!
There have been numerous studies that indicate that if you’re exposed to light, you’ll find it easier to wake up as it will promote the feeling of alertness. If you’ve woken up before the sunlight is outside, putting on artificial lights will be fine, but it’s always better to wake up to the sun.
Breathe In… Breathe Out
A deep breath in and out in the morning can help relieve stress and lower your heart rate whilst stabilizing your blood pressure. Speaking of techniques like this, it’s also a good idea to try and practice a morning routine of meditation. It might seem a bit silly to begin with, but it will give you a calming feeling that should take the sting out of the early mornings and set the tone for the rest of the day.
It’s a good idea to try and move meditation into your daily routine at least twice a day. If you can do that and continue to remain calm, your sleeping patterns should become a breeze rather than a chore.
Get Those Tunes On!
Music can make anything easier! Going on a run? Doing housework? Having a shower? Having a party? All of these things are made simple by putting on some of your favorite music. Waking up is no exception and by having a routine of music in the morning will get you moving much quicker!
If you have a smart speaker, try and set a routine to your alarm - wake up to a song every morning (just make sure it’s a different song everyday to avoid monotony and associating that song with the worst time of day!)
Take A Refreshing Shower
Not only is a shower important for our daily hygiene, but it can also serve as a way to wake us up, and at night - it can relax us for bedtime!
Getting yourself clean will make you feel better psychologically, it will hydrate you which is a great way to get some alertness, and the oils or gels can really get your body going! Double this up with music and you’re ready to start your day off strong.
At night time, going to bed after becoming clean and fresh - going into clean sheets and using a relaxing shower gel or shampoo can make sleep so easy, hopefully leading to an easy wake up! Always check the bottles of your shower gels or soaps to see if they promote a “wake up effect” or “relax” effect.
Remain Fit
Having a daily exercise routine can burn off stored energy that can be a problem at night. With so much energy that your body needs to burn, your mind might not find it easy to sleep.
Moreover, people who are fitter are less likely to have breathing difficulties like sleep apnea - meaning their sleep isn’t disrupted as much. Fitter people also should have a more regulated body temperature and will find it easier to sleep in certain conditions.
Brush Your Teeth ASAP
Studies have shown that the minty taste can lead to a high focus and give you a pick me up! And of course, it promotes the hygiene level and assists your mental health ready for the day. It’s also been linked that bad oral hygiene might lead to bad heart health - which can lead to poor sleeping.
Have Warm Robes Nearby
One problem people have getting up in the morning could be that they live in a cold environment and want to stay in their warm beds. If you have a robe nearby, that cold feeling can be reduced, allowing you to get up and get moving.
Final Thoughts
Waking up in the morning can be hard for some of us, but it can be helped by following some of this advice. The key thing is to have a healthy lifestyle and try to stick with a routine. A healthy diet, a healthy exercise routine, a healthy hygiene routine and a healthy mind will all improve your body and mind, leading to a great night's sleep and an easy wake-up.
